My Erhu, My life

Yesterday I almost went insane, I could not find my notebook which had all my English handouts, Stats notes and Maths notes, revision materials (and the exam is next week!!) Then Wang Yue and I were having this amazing race and treasure hunt at the central campus. hehe and in the end I found it...

Okie.. This is not the important thing..

Last night I couldnt finish my English essay, I forgot to check my English Webpage for assignments, then I thot I did quite well in terms of keeping up with the readings, the evaluations and everything.. but when I opened the Assignment folder, I saw four essays due either today on this Sat!! Argh.. basically there were two essay reviews which I crapped 2 pages each last night, one argument/ logic fallacy essay, I was supposed to research on "Guilt by Association" and "Personal Attack" and present them in class today!! at the moment I saw the fourth one, I knew I am gone... At the beginning of the term, there was this book called "Goat" which we must read and write a book review of 5 pages.. After like 3 months, I forgot about it completely.. and I was still at 1/3 of the book.. so I decided I am not going to finish the book, cos I cannot finish it anyway, even I can, I wont be able to crap a five page book review overnight.. so after I finished the essay reviews, I just started to research for my logic essays.. omg.. It is disastrous.. Trust me when I said it is disastrous.. For the first time in my life, I thought I am a person without logic at all.. and I did admire Wang Yue for her courage and ability to major in Philosophy..

Okie.. this seems nothing related to my Erhu.. Let me continue.. I was really out of my mind at 2am, so I put down all the logic stuff, and I started to polish my Erhu.. haha gave my dear Lao Gong a SPA..

my qian1 jin1 was about to break, so I cut it and retied it.. Then I realised I ran out of the nice nice qian1 jin1s that liu lao shi gave me!! sobz.. And I did as what liu laoshi told me to reduce the zao4 yin1.. I cut a tiny piece of soft cloth (that kind of very thin one) and made a padding inbetween the two strings where the qian1 jin1 is tied.. Yea.. Then you know I love to tie qian1 jin1 a lot, esp my total-internal knot.. ahahah

Then came to teh string.. I was using some strings made in Austria, it was supposed to be good, but I feel very bad that I did not take good care of it.. the rosin stains could be seen everywhere.. and at the place where teh qian1 jin1 is tied, the A string is rusted.. so I use toothpaste.. the string looks shinier and sexier after I rubbed with my poor towel.. but I dun think toothpaste is that effective in terms of removing rust.. and I am damn pissed by myself lah.. I should have notices when the part of qian1 jin1 near the strings became reddishbrown in colour.. I was really afraid that the string will fail me on the stage one week later..

Then I polished my Erhu lah.. haha I just use the super light and soft cloth to rub lol.. That's one thing good about remembering rubbing your Erhu every time you finish.. It is like giving your beloved Lao3 Gong1 a massage every day lah.. and your Lao Gong will look damn good.. haha..

After that, I took out the bow, Rosin it carefully (I think Pirastro is seriously a damn good brand, the rosin sticks to your bow.. not much zao4 yin1..) [okie, I was looking for a JADE rosin in China, but I could not find!! Then I din have enough time to meet my senior who came back from France with a JADE rosin when I was in Nnajing!! Yucks!!!] And I cut off the left over stubs of the ma3 wei3..

If it was not so late, I swear I would paly.. But it was almost 3am when I finished, so I played the pizzicato part in Tao2 Hua1 Guo4 Du4 softly, haha without the bow inbetween the strings.. It sounds seriously not bad!!

hmm what else did I do last night? Yea.. I cleared my Erhu case, Then I realized I put 4 sets of strings in 4 different places of my Erhu case.. Washed the towel which got a lot of rosin stain and toothpaste.. hehe.. when I finished, I was quite sad lah, cos I had to go back to my stupid logic essays.. but if you know me well, you will know I did not do the essay.. I started to do the maths assignment due next monday, and I finished it! ohho.. Then I went to sleep.. haha in the end I finished my logic essay outside the lecture theatre this morning.. lol

Then I started to miss my other 2 Lao3 Gong1.. the Erhu who accompanied me in the 4 and half years in Singapore, he was the FIRST Erhu that belonged to me.. But I dun think I really took a good care of him, and now, I didnt even bring him with me.. I miss him so much lah.. If I have the other lao gong, then probably I can play Er Quan and Yang Guan San Die together lol.. (ps, my new Erhu sounds awesome in CG, GD.. except in DA..) Then I thought of my Gao Huuz who accompanied me in my RJCO time, the damn lousy one in J1, and the sexy one in J2.. the first one is probably somewhere in the DHSCO store room, and the second one I am not sure, with some hot babes in RJCO? or currently he is single? Wang Yue is right, nobody will want a girlfriend like me: no matter how nice they are, how outstanding they are, they can never get into top 3 in my list of lao3 gong1.. Luckily I cannot play dizi.. haha if that is the case, then I would rather stay with my erhu forever!! hehe that day during Anthropology, the prof mentioned that marriage between live and dead is actually possible. so I cannot see any problem in the marriage between my erhu and I.. (Polygamy rocks!!) haha I know I sounded crazy.. but I have not felt so strong about my Erhu for so long le.. Let me be mad for once bah..

Hello. Actually inserting a little pad between the qianjin and strings might reduce the zaoyin, but it can also make ur erhu sound very dull and old, very "men1". To stabilise the qianjin you can use other methods, like apply glue all round after tying to make it fixed.

To preserve the life of your very expensive nice strings, you should actually cover your strings with a cloth (any cheapo car wash cloth or old tshirt will do) before keeping the bow, such that none of the rosin will stick onto the cloth. Since your expensive strings are really steel cores wound with a softer metal, you should protect it as such so as to retain uniformity along the string and keep the vibrations uniform. Using too much corrosive substances to clean the strings might damage the wound metal.

hmm well..

1stly, my erhu is still quite new considering I havent played it in the past 5 yrs, the sound was bright and sometimes sharp, so I want to make it dull.. haha

I did wrap the string with cloth lah.. but it doesnt help that much.. and I dun think toothpaste is corrosive.. cos we are applying it on our teeth everyday wat..

oh u'd be surprised...i have my suspicions about how whitening toothpastes actually work...plus i think our enamels are pretty strong. =)

u can try "messaging" the skin to improve the sound. with ur thumbs, from top to bottom (along direction of the scales). will help to soften and even out the skin a little.

People have asked me why my name is so damn bloody hard to pronounce, I would say it's not my problem. Just in case anyone who is interested to find out what the name actually means, here it is:

萱 pronounces as xuan, is the flower called daylily pictured above;

仲 pronounces as zhong, means I am the second child in the family
